The goals of this four-year project aimed to help reduce poverty among local farmers, generate income and jobs, and pave the way for the development of export potential in the Inle Lake/Southern Shan State area in Myanmar's Shan State by upgrading the region's horticultural supply capacity and sustainable tourism and interlinking these two resources.
Through a "UN Trade Cluster Programme," four implementation agencies have been involved in his project:
- the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO);
- the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD);
- the International Labour Organization (ILO); and
- the International Trade Centre (ITC), with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) as the trust fund manager.
Areas of interest included entrepreneurship development, health and safety-related market requirements, new product developments, and policy-related value-chain assessment, as well as enhancing the horticultural and tourism sectors.
This four-year project was funded in part by contributions to the Global Aid-for-Trade (AFT) initiative from the Government of Switzerland. The AfT initiative supports trade in least developed countries (LDCs) through its Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). Between 2019 and 2023, the International Trade Centre worked within this SECO-United Nations Cluster on Trade and Productive Capacity Project in Myanmar with a focus on improving the country's horticultural features and on developing sustainable tourism practices as a way to create and build on business linkages.
